Prologue

If you are afraid to fall,
everywhere is edge and
crumbling:

the puddle where the rubble of
the old road rises;

this spring about to uncoil,
all at once in ripples,
out of bole and bough;

the speckled depths in the eyes
of friends,
when words threaten to open the
gulfs of the heart.

Nowhere is safe now;
we could tumble through anywhere,
without warning,
slipping into adjacent landscapes
we have always inhabited,
but with closed eyes,
between breaths.

Everywhere
we are threatened
with awakening.
