Nightfall in the Slad Valley

Skim me the cream of this summer lane
under the owl dusk
shadow wake of green dreams crumpling the valley
while the ancient horns
new dipped in silver
toss in my blood

the night is about its business
on soft wings
the lighted windows shut the houses inwards
but the gardens are alert
stirring under smooth lawn sheets
listening for the wild

slowly
celebrant soul seeps from me
a kind of signature
a scent trailing from me, loud
as a fire flair, for those who peer
out through the bark of trees
and spread dim moisture as they gather
at my back
curious and
welcoming

I’ll turn suddenly
with the curdy hedgerows thick
at my shoulder…
turn and wait
